Hogenberg was a Flemish artist, copper engraver and publisher who started in Mechelen, and later worked in London (1568–1569), and Cologne, where he died. He engraved maps for Ortelius’ “Theatrum orbis terrarum” and was a joint publisher with Braun for the first four (of six) volumes of “Civitates orbis terrrarum” 1572–1588. This great city atlas eventually contained 546 prospects, bird-eye views and map views of cities from all over the world.
